About Us
RISE
Founded in the year 2016, and re-registered in 2024, RISE is a national Non-Governmental Organization founded by refugees and internally displaced persons in Uganda. RISE founding was a response to the vast survival struggles experienced by refugees in Uganda. The various types of turbulence in the Great Lakes region of Africa generated refugees in large numbers that flocked into Uganda and who faced several difficulties getting basic life needs of food, shelter and medical care.
The huge influx of refugees for the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Eritrea and Ethiopia to mention but a few, meant the traditional main refugee agencies were overwhelmed by this inward influx of refugees into Uganda. RISE aimed at trying to assist narrow the assistance support to supplement both Government of Uganda and other refugee support agencies alike.
Since its inception and founding, RISE has supported thousands of refugees and internally displaced persons and it continues to do so to date. Other deliberate extension of support to refugees and IDPs has been in the areas of economic empowerment and integration of refugees and IDPs through skills training, job placements; business and literacy coaching. This aims at enhancing capabilities and opportunities for the members. It also boosts their psycho-social statuses and self esteem as well as upping the desire for self sufficiency.

Vision:
- RISE envisions an Africa where refugees and forced migrants feel at home away from their original communities, amidst the enormous challenges they encounter either in transit or in settlements.
Mission
-
RISE’s mission is to facilitate, advocate and promote the integration of refugees and internally displaced persons to live in harmony with communities in which they find themselves.
These, we do by:
- - Creating an enabling environment by fostering positive relationships with and among host communities.
- - Supporting role through peer to peer interactions; legal aid, protection, emergencies and relief supports.
- - Empowerment. This we undertake so refugees and forced migrants are able to become self reliant, self sufficient and able to perform positive economic roles towards prosperity of economies where they find themselves in.
- - Environment and climate change involvement and activities: This we undertake, so refugees and displaced persons are able to join the rest of the global communities to offset global carbon footprints as well as help restore physical environments degraded by human activities.
Core values:
-
Compassion:
RISE practices empathy. We value and help magnify strengths of refugees and displaced persons while at the same time downplaying their relative weaknesses. -
Leverages:
We are aware we cannot achieve it all by and on our own. We leverage momentum from like - minded support networks to help accelerate our achievements. -
Empowerment:
We believe refugees and internally displaced people should aim and be assisted to look towards self sustenance so they become independent in the temporal locations or where they eventually find themselves in. This may be through skills acquisition, literacy trainings in languages and business, and job placements. -
Inclusion:
We try as much as we can to encourage and assimilate refugees and displaced persons to communities in which they live. This we strongly believe supports them to achieve diversity and equity.
